Knitting should be fun, not a compromise. Your data is yours alone, and it lives on your device.
Knitter's Library keeps your stash, projects, needles and notes on your own device. There's no account to create, nothing to log in to, and nothing of yours sitting on our servers.
It really started to bother me how most digital tools collect my data, push me to watch stupid ads, make me create yet another profile tied to my email, and force certain cookies on me whether I want them or not. So I decided to go the hard way instead.
Shrinking your digital footprint does mean taking a bit of responsibility into your own hands — that's the price of privacy. So your data in Knitter's Library doesn't sit on our servers; it lives with you, on your device. And to keep it safe, you need to back it up now and then — that's what the Export Data feature is for.
What we don't have
- No account.
- No email of yours.
- No password we store.
- No analytics about how you use the app.
- No record of what's in your stash.
- No idea who you are.
What we do count — anonymously
We don't track what you do — we just count whether the app is being used at all. When your devices sync, our relay adds an anonymous tally that a sync happened, plus the rough country it came from (never your IP or address). No idea who you are, no access to what's in your library, nothing about how you use the app — it's only there so we can tell, roughly, how many people are out there knitting, and where.
How sync works without us seeing it
When you connect a second device, your phone and tablet share data through a small relay we run — but it only ever sees encrypted bytes. The key that unlocks them never leaves your devices; it comes from a 12-word recovery phrase that only you hold. So even though we run the server, we genuinely cannot read your library. That's not a promise about what we choose to look at — it's a property of how it's built.
Sharing between users
You can share a single card — a yarn, a project, or a technique — with a friend. The app packs that card into an encrypted bundle and hands you a short link to send however you like. When your friend opens it, the card lands in their Ideas & Inspiration as a read-only keepsake: it never mixes into their own stash, projects or counts, and they can delete it anytime. Two things keep this private by design. First, sharing only happens when you tap Share on a specific card — nothing is ever shared automatically. Second, the link itself is the key: the relay stores only encrypted bytes, so even we can't see what you shared. Only someone with the complete link can open it, and the link expires by itself after 7 days.
Why we built it this way
A knitter's library is personal — private choices, ideas, money, and plans. We didn't want to be one more app that quietly hoovers that up. Subscription apps have made privacy fragile: your data becomes the thing held over you. We'd rather not hold anything.
The trade-off we made for you
Because of this, there are things we genuinely can't do: we can't email you unless you contact us yourself, we can't restore your library if you lose your recovery phrase (so keep it safe!), and we can't show you who you might know. We think that's the right trade.
